Red and Blue lake

Imotski is around 60 kilometers away from Zivogosce Blato (distance map is attached below the text).

Imotski is a town in the Dalmatian hinterland, and near the town is a real geomorphologic phenomena that makes a true nature beauty and important sights of the region: Red Lake and Blue Lake.

Those two lakes present favorite resort to tourists and locals who want to relax in nature. Blue and Red Lake are extremely rare. The shape, volume, their color, and above all, a way of their creation, are indeed unique; lakes are formed in magnificent underground caves.

Blue Lake is one of the most beautiful Croatian lakes. The stairs lead to its ground, which makes the lake accessible for visitors and swimmers. Blue Lake is popular for swimming because of the clear water, extremely blue color and a pleasant temperature during summer period.

The water level of the Blue Lake varies during the year. Sometimes it dries up completely and when that happens, a football game is traditionally organized on the bottom of the lake. Due to the way the lake is formed, during the rainy season there is the effect of the springs on the lake's bottom, and during dry periods, it creates the effect of sinks.

Red Lake is a real miracle of Croatian karst. It is located under five hundred meters high vertical cliffs. This is the deepest European lake. Its depth is not yet fully measured, but it is assumed that the Red Lake is among the deepest lakes in the whole world. According to the latest measurements, bottom of the lake is placed six meters below the level of the Adriatic Sea. Red Lake was named after the red rocks which are on the edge of the lake. Because of the steep cliffs that surround the lake, it is not possible to access it. Due to the unknown depth and inaccessibility to the lake, it remains as a mysterious natural phenomenon.

The Red Lake has it's legend story. According to the legend, the Red Lake was created as a result of the collapsed castle of the rich man named Gavan, who was married to a very evil woman who had no compassion for poor people. After their castle collapsed, water and evil supernatural beings had filled the chasm and their screams and sound can be heard today from the red hatches.

There is a theory that you can't hint a stone into the Red Lake. Natives explain that with a legend theory, and scientists believe it is because of the strong streams above the lake, which pull the stone as a magnet back into the rocks. It is believed that the person who manage to throw a stone into the Lake, will be forever happy.
